Matt Barkley, the backup quarterback of the Buffalo Bills, has recently rejected a payment in Bitcoin from the Cincinnati Bengals and 49ers. While the request has been rejected, Barkley’s interest in digital currencies is helping draw attention towards the cryptocurrency world.

NFL Teams Don’t Want to Pay in Bitcoin

Barkley was reportedly attempting to get paid his paychecks from Bengals and 49ers in Bitcoin. The unique request was denied by the teams. He is one of the many supporters of Bitcoin who are playing in the NFL this year. Professional athletes have started to take notice of the growing popularity of digital currencies off late.

Russell Okung, offense tackle at the Los Angeles Charges is one of such athletes who are interested in cryptocurrencies. He also tweeted:

“Pay me in Bitcoin.”

He also mulled over the possibility of ESPN talking about an athlete being paid in BTC. He also said that he is a part of the revolution and goes long on BTC and short on bankers.

Barkley’s Ambition and The NFL’s Refusal

Barkley was considered a potential no. 1 pick in the NFL draft while playing for USC. However, he was eventually drafted in the fourth round in 2013 by the Philadelphia Eagles. Since then, he has played with several teams including Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals before working with Buffalo Bills.

In 2016, he played seven games for Chicago and made six starts, but that is the only significant NFL action he has had till date. He signed a two-year extension contract with the Bill before the end of the last season. However, the stands that he is taking now, for bringing an alternative payment system to the athletes is a new frontier. According to crypto analyst Anthony Pompliano, he is a pioneering a new frontier.

It will be a long time before NFL teams begin thinking about cryptocurrency payments, but Barkley has opened the discussion which could likely go forward from here.
