Bitcoin can now be loaded on the national contactless smart card used to pay for public transport in Argentina. The card can be used to pay for bus rides, trains, motorboats, and subways in 37 cities, including Buenos Aires. Local news outlet cripto247, users in these cities will be able to use the facility starting Thursday.

Sube Card Will Help Bring Crypto to Argentina

Sube (Sistema Único de Boleto Electrónico) is a rechargeable contactless smart card that can now be funded with BTC. Promoted by the Secretary of Transportation, these cards can be used for a variety of transport options.

The new options are possible because of the integration of fintech startup Bitex and an online card funding platform Alto Viaje. Their website states:

“Sube is the only card that allows you to pay for public transport throughout Argentina.”

With this integration, Alto Viaje is offering users two ways to fund their cards- Bitcoin or PayPal. It will soon allow users to fund their cards through Rapipago as well. “Alto Viaje decided to use Bitex’s infrastructure for the technology and liquidity it has, a necessary condition to face a project of this magnitude,” says their website.

What’s the Sube Card Bringing to Users?

Manuel Beaudroit, Bitex CMO said that the Sube BTC support is a project of great importance as it is bringing disruptive technologies like Bitcoin to average people. It also demonstrates the real applications and value of the tech in daily life. He also informed users that they will need to fund their cards with a minimum of 50 Argentine pesos in BTC.

Alto Viaje director Luciano Verardo said that the company intends to offer innovative and safe services to the users. He added that the Bitex integration will help them open new possibilities for financial inclusion.
